UK announces new mandatory housing measures

The UK’s National Farmers Union (NFU) said it is working with its members to ensure all necessary measures are in place to house the birds.

Defra said the new measures will take effect in the UK from November 29, 2021.

“Protecting the health and welfare of birds is our number one priority and, with an increasing number of confirmed cases of avian influenza in recent weeks, the introduction of national housing measures will help keep all birds, whether they are part of a trade or a backyard back-flock, as safe as possible, ”said Aimee Mahony, Chief Poultry Advisor at the NFU.

“These measures apply to all poultry farmers, whether you have a hen in the garden or a large poultry business,” she added. the urgency of the situation, I encourage everyone to act as quickly as possible. ”

Mahony went on to say that vigilance is essential with bird flu. It is essential that poultry farmers report any signs of disease in their birds as soon as possible in order to prevent the spread of the disease.

Additional precautions were recommended, including regular cleaning and disinfection of equipment, clothing and vehicles. Non-essential workers and visitors should have limited access to birds.
